Michael Birchenall – A Passion & Spirit That Will Live Forever

It is with great sorrow that we share the news that the Founder & Editor of Foodservice Monthly- Michael Birchenall passed away on January 9th, 2017. He passed peacefully with his family by his side at Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he received a lung transplant three years ago.

Foodservice Monthly is the Mid Atlantic industry’s only regional trade publication, It has become a very highly respected publication for those in the foodservice industry.


Michael and Foodservice Monthly were honored to receive the RAMW’s 2007 Allied Industry Member of the Year award, and in 2008 the Joan Hisaoka Associate Member of the Year award.

Michael had a great love for the Foodservice Industry and his many friends and colleagues became his 2nd family. One of his greatest loves was to promote and help new businesses and upcoming Restaurants become successful. With camera in hand he attended events, covered stories and captured memories. His wisdom, humor, compassion & great knowledge of this industry was his special gift that he shared with everyone. Michael’s loss will be felt by all who knew and loved him.

Silver Communications continues to own and operate Foodservice Monthly. With Michael’s spirit and passion to guide us, along with the love and support of the Silver Communications family, all our contributing writers and friends – his legacy will continue to live on.
