Howard Community College Students Excel at the Arc Chocolate Ball

HCC wins at Chocolate Ball for fith straight year.

Howard Community College’s (HCC) students from the culinary and hospitality program won the People’s Choice Award at The Arc of Howard County Chocolate Ball for the fifth year in a row. This year HCC also won the Judges’ Choice Award. The theme for the March 23 ball at The Turf Valley Resort, sponsored by BB&T, was Sweet 16 as this was the 16th year for the event. The culinary students worked under the guidance of instructors, Chef David Milburn and Chef Gregory Wentz.

Student cake decorators were: Abbey Reid, Barbara Gallagher and Mark Santamaria.

Student cake bakers were: Julie Thierer and Evan Heim.

Student volunteers and candy makers were: Rachel Smith, Anita Whiteside, Anjole Williams, Michael Morrison, Madeleine Raffael, Sara Rocco, Kate Murphy, Ryan Kaffen and Justin Horner. Approximately 3000 pieces of chocolate were made and served.

Known as “The Premier” event in Howard County, The BB&T Chocolate Ball is the biggest fundraiser for The Arc of Howard County. Generously supported by its sponsors, the black-tie event includes music, dancing, a silent auction and ultimate confection contest. Bakers from all over the state compete to illustrate the theme in sugary goodness. What does the Arc do: This year, the organization that began in 1961 as a volunteer parent support group will touch the lives of more than 1,000 individuals. The Arc is the oldest and largest non-profit organization that provides services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Howard County.
