Federal Hill Takes ‘Green’ Back to Its Irish Roots

Federal Hill turns green on Saturday, March 8 for the city’s largest Irish celebration – the Federal Hill Irish Stroll – a St. Paddy’s bar tour. The weekend before St. Patrick’s Day, you can join thousands of lads and lasses for a day filled with Irish tunes, green beer and raising money for the non-profit Federal Hill Hospitality Association (FHHA). Between 12 – 9 p.m., the Federal Hill Irish Stroll will feature great specials at 17 of Federal Hill’s best establishments including: Mother’s Grille, Ropewalk Tavern, MaGerks, Abbey Burger Bistro, Ryleigh’s, Rowhouse Grille, Illusions Magic Bar, Crazy Lil’s, Pub Dog, Stalking Horse, Banditos, C&R Pub, No Way Jose, Mad River, Social Pub & Pie, Blue Agave and Nobles.

Guests can enjoy some serious bagpipin’ while keepin an eye out for some festive leprechauns. The FHHA strives to represent the best interest of its members on state and local legislation, hospitality and tourism concerns, and community relations. Monies raised (over $20,000 through 2013) helped fund local community projects including: street cleanings, tree planting campaigns, neighborhood security plans, and supporting over 100 local schools.

The historic Pimlico Race Course, home of The Preakness will host the 4th Annual Decanter on April 12-13. Presented by The Maryland Wineries Association, the event highlights the heritage and tradition of both Maryland wine and Maryland horse racing. Enjoy a view of live horse races from the Grandstand, samples of fine Maryland wine, great food and wine & equine focused arts & crafts.

Mikie’s Diner and Outdoor Café is now open for dinner. Located at 1201 North Crain Highway in Glen Burnie, Mikie’s might just be THE cutest diner ever! A favorite among locals, Mike’s offers some excellent specials for breakfast entrees, crab cakes and fried chicken platters and their New York strip steak. AND—Mikie’s is the home of the Mikie’s burger! Ya gotta check this place out.

B-MORE GOES HOLLYWOOD! Very cool. The Netflix hit, House of Cards—much of which was filmed throughout Maryland— features Elk Run Vineyards’ Liberty Tavern Cabernet Sauvignon in a dinner scene in the third and seventh episodes of the newly released second season. “We were excited and pleased that the show would go to so much trouble to use a local wine,” says Carol Wilson of Elk Run Vineyards.

The Esophageal Cancer Action Network (ECAN)’s Cancer Dancer Gala 2014 will “go Hollywood,” Saturday, April 5, from 7 to 11 p.m., at downtown Baltimore’s Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel.

Bogie & Bacall’s son Stephen Bogart will be a featured guest, as ECAN celebrates its partnership with the estate of film legend Humphrey Bogart, who died of esophageal cancer, in 1957. As a nod to Bogie and old Hollywood, this black-tie optional fundraiser is designed to feature “all the stuff that dreams are made of.”

Experience the glitz and glam of Tinseltown at the party that will feature cocktails, a seated dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions and swag bags! ECAN is a national non-profit organization, based in Baltimore led by a board of directors of top physicians, business leaders and families that have been touched by Esophageal Cancer. Tickets are $175/person.

CONGRATS to Kathy and Jay Reeder at Hempen Hill BBQ in Hagerstown. Jay finished 19th in the nation for Brisket and 21st in the nation overall – out of over 5,600 teams in the KCBS (Kansas City BBQ society circuit). So – I’m thinkin’—if you’re in the mood for some serious, award-winning BBQ – THIS is the place to go!

Attention-gluten free people. Meet 27 Restaurant and Sweet Sin Bakery with its new look, new logo, new menu and … FINALLY … beer, wine and cocktails! And a new name: introducing Sweet27 Bar and Restaurant! Owners Richard and Renee D’Souza offer a twist on traditional American cuisine, a fusion of South Asian and Caribbean flavors. And HELLO, their desserts are ridiculously great. My fave is the chocolate mousse cake.
